Traditional Turkish Beverages You Can Make at Home

Turkey's rich cultural heritage is reflected not only in its cuisine but also in its traditional beverages. Many of these drinks can be easily made at home, bringing a taste of Turkish hospitality to your table. Here are some traditional Turkish beverages that you can prepare yourself.

Ayran

Ayran is a refreshing yogurt-based drink that is loved in Turkey, especially during hot summer days. It is simple to prepare and pairs well with a variety of dishes.

Ingredients: Yogurt, water, salt.

Instructions: In a blender, combine one cup of plain yogurt with one cup of cold water and a pinch of salt. Blend until smooth and frothy. Adjust the consistency by adding more water or yogurt as needed. Serve chilled in a glass.

Turkish Coffee

Turkish coffee is a beloved ritual and is prepared using very finely ground coffee beans. Its unique preparation method makes it distinctively strong and flavorful.

Ingredients: Finely ground Turkish coffee, water, and sugar (optional).

Instructions: In a cezve (a small pot), combine one cup of cold water with one tablespoon of coffee and sugar to taste. Stir well and place the cezve over low heat. Allow it to heat gradually, stirring occasionally. Just before it begins to boil, remove it from the heat and let it settle. Pour slowly into small cups, making sure to keep the grounds at the bottom of the cezve. Enjoy your Turkish coffee unfiltered.

Şalgam

Şalgam is a fermented beverage made from turnips and is especially popular as an accompaniment to kebabs.

Ingredients: Turnips, water, salt, and bulgur (optional).

Instructions: Peel and chop two medium-sized turnips, then blend them with water until smooth. Strain the mixture into a large glass jar, add a tablespoon of salt, and, if desired, add a small amount of bulgur for flavor. Seal the jar and let it ferment in a cool place for about 3-5 days. Once fermented, strain it again and serve chilled.

Boza

Boza is a thick, fermented drink made from grains, most commonly from bulgur or millet. It has a slightly sweet and tangy flavor and is typically enjoyed in winter.

Ingredients: Bulgur, water, sugar, and yeast.

Instructions: Soak one cup of bulgur in water overnight. The next day, cook it until soft, then blend it with water to create a thick paste. Heat the combination in a pot, stirring in sugar to taste, until it reaches a boil. Let it cool to room temperature before adding a pinch of yeast. Pour the mixture into a clean jar and allow it to ferment for 2-3 days. Stir well before serving, and sprinkle cinnamon on top for an aromatic finish.

Çay (Turkish Tea)

No Turkish experience is complete without çay, the country's signature tea that is served throughout the day.

Ingredients: Turkish black tea, water.

Instructions: Use a two-tiered teapot (çaydanlık). Fill the lower part with water and boil. Add two tablespoons of loose black tea to the upper pot and pour some boiling water over it. Allow it to steep for about 10 minutes. Once brewed, serve by mixing strong tea from the upper pot with water from the bottom pot, according to your taste.
