How to Make the Best Turkish Dough-based Desserts

Turkish cuisine is renowned for its rich flavors and diverse dishes, particularly its delectable dough-based desserts. If you’re looking to explore this sweet side of Turkey, you’re in for a treat. Here’s a guide to making some of the best Turkish dough-based desserts that will impress your family and friends.

1. Baklava

Baklava is arguably the most famous Turkish dessert, known for its flaky layers and sweet syrup. To make this delightful treat, you’ll need:

  • 1 package of phyllo dough
  • 1 cup of melted butter
  • 2 cups of chopped nuts (walnuts, pistachios, or almonds)
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking pan and layer half of the phyllo sheets, brushing each layer with butter. Mix the nuts with cinnamon, and sprinkle the mixture evenly over the phyllo. Top with the remaining phyllo dough, buttering each sheet. Cut into diamond shapes, then bake for about 30-35 minutes until golden brown.

For the syrup, combine sugar, water, and vanilla in a saucepan. Boil for about 10 minutes, then pour over the hot baklava as soon as it comes out of the oven. Allow it to soak and cool for a few hours before serving.

2. Kunefe

Kunefe is a delicious cheese-filled dessert topped with crispy shredded dough. Here’s how to create this indulgent dish:

  • 1 package of kataifi (shredded phyllo dough)
  • 1 cup of melted butter
  • 1 cup of mozzarella cheese (or any melty cheese)
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 teaspoons of rose water (optional)

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a round baking dish with butter. Combine the kataifi with melted butter in a bowl, ensuring it’s well coated. Layer half of the shredded dough in the baking dish, followed by an even layer of mozzarella cheese. Top with the remaining kataifi, pressing it down to secure the cheese in place. Bake for 30-40 minutes until golden and crispy.

To make the syrup, boil sugar, water, and rose water in a saucepan for about 10 minutes. Once the kunefe is out of the oven, pour the hot syrup over it and allow it to soak for a few minutes before serving.

3. Şekerpare

Şekerpare is a sweet cookie-like dessert soaked in lemon syrup. Here’s what you need to make it:

  • 1 cup of unsalted butter
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar
  • 3 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons of semolina
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice

Cream the butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in the egg yolks and vanilla. Gradually incorporate flour, baking powder, and semolina until a soft dough forms. Shape the dough into small balls and place them on a lined baking sheet. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes until lightly golden.

For the syrup, combine sugar, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Boil for 10 minutes, then let cool. Once the cookies are baked, pour the syrup over them while they are still warm, allowing them to absorb the sweetness. Serve after they soak up the syrup.
